PWSO operates through five core programmatic divisions, each designed to address the most critical needs of Afghan communities — especially women, girls, and vulnerable populations.
1. Health — Expanding access to basic and essential health services, strengthening healthcare systems, vaccination drives, maternal and child health, and disease prevention.
2. Economic Empowerment — Advancing women's economic and social development through vocational training, microfinance, livelihoods support, and entrepreneurship programs.
3. Education — Implementing literacy, vocational training, teacher support, community learning centers, and education advocacy programs across Afghanistan.
4. Research & MEAL — Conducting rigorous research, monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning to inform policy, practice, and continuous improvement.
5. Agriculture & Climate Change — Implementing agricultural initiatives and climate change awareness programs that strengthen community resilience and sustainable development.
In addition, our Women Empowerment Department promotes gender equality, supports women's leadership, advocates against harmful practices, and builds safe spaces for women and girls. Our Engineering, WASH & ES/NFI Unit provides clean water, latrines, hygiene education, and shelter response. Our Food Security & Livelihood Unit supports farmers and emergency food distribution. Our Agriculture & Livestock Unit supports food security and rural livelihoods through crops, fruits, vegetables, and animal husbandry.
The Program Department is the largest at PWSO. It plans, implements, and evaluates initiatives across five specialised units, each tailored to the unique needs of the communities served.
Expands access to schooling for children and adults. Focuses on literacy, vocational training, teacher support, and school infrastructure. Often works on curriculum development, community learning centers, and advocacy for education rights.
Provides primary healthcare services and strengthens local health systems. Runs vaccination campaigns, maternal and child health programs, and disease prevention initiatives. Trains health workers and supports clinics or mobile health teams.
Ensures communities have reliable access to food. Supports farmers with seeds, tools, and training. Works on nutrition programs, emergency food distribution, and resilience against droughts or crop failure.
Infrastructure development, clean water sources, latrines, and hygiene practices. Responds to waterborne disease outbreaks and improves community sanitation. Installs wells, water purification systems, and runs hygiene education campaigns.
Supports food security, economic growth, and rural livelihoods. Agriculture involves the cultivation of crops, fruits, and vegetables, while livestock focuses on raising animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. Together, they provide income, employment, nutrition, and raw materials for communities and industries.
